Introduction to the program

Strengthening community resilience to violent extremism (VE) in Nigeria is a shared Government of Nigeria (GoN) and international community priority. A peaceful environment in which women and youth in the northwest states participate meaningfully in resolving community conflict and vulnerability will open opportunities for greater economic resilience and improved public service delivery. Advancing recovery and longer-term development in these ravaged underserved states is a critical element of broader GoN efforts for growth, stability, and self-reliance in Africa’s most populous and largest economy.
The program is supporting targeted, locally led efforts to strengthen the resilience of communities vulnerable to violent extremist infiltration and conflict. The Program is titled: Engaging Women and Youth as Agent of Social Cohesion through Resilience Building and Community Peace Initiatives. NEYIF is working towards two interdependent objectives, "Enhance the resilience of communities vulnerable to violent extremist infiltration and conflict"; and Objective 2, "Develop local capacity to respond to emerging threats". Implementing effective and relevant activities within these two mutually reinforcing objectives will mitigate the underlying grievances that make target communities vulnerable to VEO influence and other conflicts; promote social cohesion by creating or strengthening linkages within and across communities, civil society, and government entities; strengthen local response capabilities to emergent VEO and conflict threats, and develop an itinerary understanding of the evolving risks and opportunities around VE and conflict in target communities.

The project is currently at its first year of implementation in the four (4) LGAs and Eight (8) communities of Kware LGA in Durbawa and More Communities, Sokoto North LGA in Gidan Igwai and Magajin Rafi A Communities, Sokoto South LGA in Rijiya A and Mabera Magaji Communities and Wamako LGA in Arkilla and Bado Communities respectively.
